Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Yarmouth [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SZ3589/yarmouth/] [accessed 20 February 2020] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. White (1878) reports a new font here, the gift of the rector, erected in the 1873 restoration of this church. The church itself, adds White (ibid.), "was built in the reign of Henry VIII [1509-1547], after the old one had been destroyed by the French." The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 5, 1912) notes: "Baldwin de Redvers, the first of the name (+1155), granted to the priory of Christchurch Twyneham the tithes that belonged to Sir Alfred de Brockley in Yarmouth [...] The original church was said by local tradition to have been at the east end of the town, and its foundations were visible in the old churchyard in 1845. [...] Destroyed by the French in their raid of 1377, it is said to have been rebuilt on the present site only to be again reduced to a ruin in 1543. At the beginning of the 17th century it was practically rebuilt, [...] and reconsecrated by the Bishop of Salisbury on 11 March 1626." There is no mention of a font in the VCH entry. Lloyd & Pevsner (2006) note: "Font. 1873. Octagonal bowl of complex form, marble colonnettes with elaborate capitals." [NB: we have no information on the medieval font of either of the two churches].
