The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 5, 1912) notes: "Newchurch was one of the six churches mentioned in Domesday [...] as belonging to the abbey of Lire [...] The earliest building must have been of the 12th century"; no font is mentioned in the VCH entry. The present baptismal font consists of an octagonal basin decorated with floral motifs inscribed in quatrefoils on the sides, and a slightly concave underbowl chamfer; raised on an octagonal pedestal base with moulded lower base. Two-step quadrangular plinth. Low dome wooden cover with cross finial. Both font and cover are modern, the font perhaps of the 1883 restoration. [NB: we have no information on the earlier font(s) of this church]. All other churches in Newport are reported as modern in the VCH entry (ibid.), and it gives the first church built in Ventnor as St. Catherine's, "erected in 1837".
