The Victoria County History (Northamptonshire, vol. 4, 1937) notes: "The font appears to have been formed from the socket stone of a cross, worked from square to octagon shape by plain broaches, the centre hollowed to a circular bowl and lined with lead: the surface has been scraped or recut; it is mounted on a square stone base". A footnote in the VCH entry credits the Assoc. Arch. Soc. Reports, xxiii, 192, for the information, and adds:."It was turned out of the church in 1815, and in Cole's time (1837) was in the vicarage garden; it was restored to use during the incumbency of the Rev. G. P. Lightfoot (c. 1870)." The VCH shows a plan of the church interior with the font located in the nave, towards the centre (east-west), but closer to the arcade that separates the nave from the south aisle. However, the Parish web site [http://allhallowswellingborough.com/tour.aspx] [accessed 6 May 2009] shows the font at the west end of the nave, just east of the tower arch, and in the centre (north-south) of the nave [NB: a comment on this last floor plan notes that the south arcade was re-built in 1930, which may post-date the floor plan in the VCH].
