There is an entry for this Wheathill [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST5830/wheathill/] [accessed 6 February 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Phelps (1836) notes: "the church is a small and very ancient structure [...] The font partakes also of its ancient character", but does not indicate a date for either. Drawing of a font in the Harvey Pridham Drawings of English Fonts (MS 56). [Folder Number, Item Description]. University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries. Special Collections Dept., done by Harvey Pridham in September 1887 accompanied by the following description: "Octagonal bowl outside; circular stem, the base being square at the lowest part, with octagonal upper portion and foot ornaments rising out of square. Modern square foot pace. Modern cover. Position, against W. wall of nave. Cir[cular] b[ow]l inside." There is no mention of any font in Pevsner's (1958) entry for this church. The entry for this church in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 10, 2010) notes: "Wheathill church, dedicated to St John, is a late foundation: there is no reference to it in the taxation list of 1291 but the benefice was in existence in 1313. [...] The earliest part of the church fabric was a fragment of a decorated window, probably the cinquefoiled east window, thrown away in the restoration of 1858 [...] The church was restored again in 1886 when the floor was lowered and the ceiling boarded, but some of the earlier woodwork and the octagonal font were retained."
