Font Notes:
Lübke (1870) notes a very handsome Gothic font in this church. Noted and illustrated in Keppler (1946). Baptismal font created in 1499 by Martin Schmidt in the late Gothic style; it consists of an octagonal basin with eight outer colonnettes with capitals and bases; the sides of the basin are deeply and prufusely carved with eight Apostles beneath Gothic canopies [L->R]: 1)Peter; 2)Paul; 3)John; 4)Andrew; 5)Bartholomew; 6)Philip; 7)James the Less; 8)James the Greater; the spaces between the figures are decorated with foliage twists in a traceried background; the eight colonnettes that form the base below frame eight scenes that occupy the niches between the pillars [L->R]: 1)Baptism of Christ; 2)Baptism; 3)Confirmation; 4)Holy Orders; 5)Matrimony; 6)Penance; 7)Eucharist; 8)Extreme Unction; at the foot of these scenes are eight couchant animal figures. [NB: cf. the Seven Sacrament fonts of East Anglia]. On an octagonal two-step plinth that appears modern, but has the decorated risers as often found on the English Perpendicular fonts of this type.
