Church Notes: Afsnee is mentioned ca. 850 among the properties of St. Peter's Abbey during the reign of King Lothar. The church is mentioned in 939 but its origins are likely even older; mentioned in 964 ("ecclesiam in Afsna"); The building has a Romanesque core from the late 12th century, in the shape of a Latin cross with a crossing tower; the tower dates from the thirteenth century; the church has undergone several modifications over the centuries.

Baptismal font consisting of an octagonal basin raised on a cluster of four moulded columns and an octagonal lower base. An inscription carved on alternate sides of the underbowl gives the date, 1601, and the name of the donor, Van der Guchte. Noted and illustrated in BALaT KIK-IRPA [http://balat.kikirpa.be/photo.php?path=M077062&objnr=15135&nr=22] [accessed 3 November 2015]; the sandstone font dated 1601 and the copper cover 1839. The font consists of a small octagonal (?) basin decorated with a moulding at the upper rim, and an inscription [cf. supra]; on a baluster-shaped slender stem decorated with mouldings and foliated patterns; the round-to-octagonal (?) lower base is decorated with incised cartouches on the upper surface, the sides moulded. The metal cover has overall dome shape, the sides heavily moulded; orb-and-Latin-cross finial.
