Noted and illustrated in Diez Tejon (2008). Described and illustrated by Carmen Baena [www.arquivoltas.com/11-Galicia/01-Eire.htm] [accessed 19 June 2009]. Baptismal font in the traditional design of a large hemispherical basin raised on a squat round-to-square base. The web site of the Patrimonio Artístico de la Diputación de Lugo [www.diputacionlugo.org/ayuntamiento/panton.patrimonio.htm] dates the baptismal font to the 17th century. The font is made of granite, as many in Galicia are, and has a broad rope moulding around the upper sides, and a less prominet one around the lower sides; there is evidence of damage to the upper rim, consistent with the removal of metal staples from the old cover; below the upper moulding is a band of symbols that include [L->R]: a Maltese cross, a fleur-de-lis [stylised anagram of Christ?], a pilgrim shell, a castellated building, another Maltese cross, another fleur-de-lis anagram,... There may be more on the hidden sides at the corner; the squat base starts at the top with a ring moulding [which may be actually part of the basin block], then splays to a polygonal shape. The wooden cover is flat and plain, modern. [NB: there is a holy-water-stoup of perhaps medieval date, located between the font and the entrance; it is a crude piece consisting of a roughly hemispherical basin raised on a plain cylindrical pedestal; it is not listed separately in BSI -- cf. Index entry for Eire No. 1 for an object listed for this location as a possible ablutions font]
