No entry found for Souldern in the Domesday survey. Gough and Gough (1887) write in their entry for this church: "The font, which Mr. Parker does not notice, stands near the S. door, and is evidently very ancient, of the simplest form, without any sculpture, and large but whether Saxon or Norman -- has not been determined. It has been roughly used, and pieces, the size of a man's hand, have been knocked out of it." The Victoria County History (Oxford, vol. 6, 1959) notes: "The church was given before 1161 to Eynsham Abbey by Jordan de Say [...] The earliest parts of the church are the tower and the north wall of the nave, which, together with the north doorway, date from the second half of the 12th century [...] The 12th-century stone font is plain and circular"; the VCH entry (ibid.) adds a footnote: "There is a Buckler drawing in MS. Top. Oxon. a 68, f. 483." [i.e., in the Bodleian Library].
