There is an entry for Uplyme [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SY3293/uplyme/] [accessed 16 November 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Pevsner (1952) and Hoskins (1954) complain about the 19th-century over-restoration, but neither mentions the font [was it replaced at the time?]. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SY3249693511] notes "Parish church. C14 and C15 restored in 1867"; no font mentioned in it. The Uplyme Church site [www.uplymechurch.org.uk/welcome/history/] [accessed 17 November 2019] notes: "An octagonal Saxon Font stands in the corner", probably referring to the stone object [font or stoup] that is located on the south of the nave, about half way down the nave; the period given for the object is way off the mark; it consists of a tapering octagonal basin with a considerable moulding all around its middle and another at the bottom, raised on a plain slender octagonal shaft and a plain octagonal lower base; the basin is rather small for a font but it appears to va had a centre drain, now blocked. The object appears to have been originally a holy-water stoup, probably re-used as font at some point. The general appearance would fit into the original date of the church itself, the 14th or 15th century. It shows damage and repairs done to the upper rim of the basin and some on the sides as well.
