There is an entry for Sampford [Spiney] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SX5372/sampford-spiney/] [accessed 2 April 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this church in the British Listed Buildings [Listing NGR: SX5342472471] reports: "octagonal granite font in transept of C14, with shields to sides and stem with recessed panels on moulded octagonal base". The Legendary Dartmoor site [www.legendarydartmoor.co.uk/samp_church.htm] [accessed 2 April 2018] notes: "The granite font dates to the sixteenth century and has panels depicting shields with various crosses carved on them". Baptismal font consisting of an octagonal basin with vertical sides decorated with charged shields between a triple band of mouldings; the tall chamfer appears plain, down to a moulding at its lower end;octagonal stem decorated with trefoil-headed niches or arches; moulded lower base, also octagonal. The wooden cover is round and flat; it appears modern.
