There are two enries for Newton [St Cyres] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SX8898/newton-st-cyres/] [accessed 13 August 2019]; no church mentioned. Only the modern font is mentioned in Stabb (1908- ), but the register for baptisms in the same source starts in 1554, which probably means there was a medieval font in this church at the time, perhaps of the 13th century, the date of the tower. Cherry & Pevsner edition of Devon (1989, 2002) reports a 18th-century marble font and "the late C12 base of a four-columned font" in this church. The entry for this church in Britain Express [www.britainexpress.com/counties/devon/churches/Newton-St-Cyres.htm] [accessed 13 August 2019] notes: "The font is modern, but against the north aisle wall is the base of a 13th century font found buried in the churchyard." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SX8793097997] only mentions the modern font: "C20 furnishings and font."
