Church Notes: Noted by Anne Scarratt, of the Kingston Local History Society: "Kingston was originally part of Ermington, a village about 4-5 miles from here. We know that there was a small religious building by at least the 13th century, but until 1402 it was not licensed for burials only christenings and marriages. The main fabric of the Church of St James the Less perhaps dates from the 13th century, when there would obviously have been some form of font. In 1402 the church received a license for burials, and following this it was enlarged. It has been assumed that the existing granite font probably dates from that period. The enlargement of the church consisted of adding a north aisle with simple granite columns in place of the old wall."
Font Notes:
Not mentioned in Stabb (1908), Pevsner (1952) or Hoskins (1954). The baptismal font consists of an octagonal basin the sides of which are decorated with blank shields inscribed in quetrafoil-in-a-circle panels; the underbowl chamfer is decorated with a quatrefoil-in-a-circle panel on each side [NB: unlike most works of the period this is rather crude and irregular work, and the surfaces around and between the motifs have been given a chiselled look totally uncharacteristic of the period; it should also be noted that the side of the basin in relation to the stemd and lower base appears to be unbalanced, too small -- was this re-carved? Is it a composite font?]; the basin is raised on an octagonal pedestal base, the stem of which is deorated with a trefoil-headed arch or window on each side; the splaying lower base is plain and octagonal. The wooden cover is octagonal and flar, of the boxy type; it apears modern. The whole is raised on a narrow rectangular plinth. Anne Scarratt, archivist of the Kingston Local History Society informs (e-mail to BSI of 5 March 2009]: "In 1402 the church received a license for burials, and following this it was enlarged. It has been assumed that the existing granite font probably dates from that period."
