There are eighteen entries for Exeter [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SX9292/exeter/] [accessed 13 May 2018], of which two mention a church in it. White's Directory of 1850 [cited in http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Exeter/StSidwell/Church.html [accessed 18 Febryary 2009]]: "The original church was a very ancient fabric, dedicated to St. Sativola, or Sidwell, a virgin, who is said to have been beheaded with a scythe, about the year 740, and to have been buried here. It was rebuilt in 1812 and '13 […] The font is octagonal, and large enough for immersion." The Western Antiquary (issue of September 1886, vol. VI, no. 4, #69 on p. 104) prints the following query: "Jenkins, in his History of Exeter, speaking of St. Sidwell's Church, mentions the font as being very ancient […] I want to know what became of this font, which is no longer in the church." A more recent source informs: "On the 2nd May 1942 […] The Church was completely burnt out and the tower was declared unsafe […] The church was rebuilt in 1957-8."
