Described and illustrated by James Gale in the Wolverhampton Journal (1909) [http://www.localhistory.scit.wlv.ac.uk/articles/Penn/StBarts/Church1.htm] [accessed 23 January 2009]: "The font may be said to belong to the Perpendicular Period of the 15th century. The pedestal is undoubtedly of that date, although the bowl may be a later substitute for the original." The font is an uncharacteristic one; it consists of an octagonal basin with a tall flat and vertical upper rim; below it the basin tapers in markedly but has a protruding moulding all arond; there is more such moulding at the bottom of the underbowl; it is raised on an octagonal pedestal base the sides of which are decorated with trefoil-headed niches; at the bottom of this stem is another pronounced moulding; the lower base is octagonal, the sides with foiled panels,
