Font Notes:
There is an entry for Combe Raleigh [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST1502/combe-raleigh/] [accessed 28 November 2017], but it mentions neither priest nor church in it. The National Monument Record, English Heritage [http://viewfinder.english-heritage.org.uk] has two photographs that include the baptismal font; one [Ref. No. BB98/06388] is captioned: "An interior view of the church looking towards the east window and altar. The font in the foreground"; the second, [Ref. No. BB98/06386] shows the font by itself. The baptismal font consists of an octagonal basin the sides of which are deeply carved with floral motifs inscribed in quatrefoil panels; the underbowl is decorated with uncommon foliage (?) motifs with elongated stems; the octagonal stem has trefoil-headed niches on the sides; the octagonal plinth appears modern. The font is not mentioned in either Pevsner (1952) or Hoskins (1954). [NB: the basin appears too sharp for a 500-year-old font; is this Victorian version of a Perpendicular font?]
