Font Notes:
There is an entry for [Long]stock [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU3537/longstock/] [accessed 10 September 2018] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 4, 1911) notes: "The church of St. Mary is modern (1876–80) [...] The font is almost the only thing remaining belonging to the old church, and has a plain octagonal bowl, with an octagonal stem and a moulded base; it is apparently of early 14th-century date." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SU3611937483] notes: "Font by S door restored. Cl5 of octagonal bowl on octagonal shaft on octagonal base." Noted and illustrated in Southern Life [http://www.southernlife.org.uk/longstockchurch.htm] [accessed 17 January 2009]: "The font (believed 14th century)". The font consists of an octagonal basin with plain vertical sides, raised on a plain octagonal pedestal base and a moulded lower base of the same shape; on a three-stem quadrangular plinth. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat, with metal decorations and handle, of the type that overlaps slightly the upper rim; appears Victorian. [cf. Index entries for Longstock Nos. 2 and 3 for two other items listed in this church]
