There is an entry for Wherwell [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU3940/wherwell/] [accessed 5 September 2018] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 4, 1911) notes: "The building is entirely modern and was erected on the site of an old church in 1856 [...] The registers are bound up in three books, the first containing baptisms, marriages and burials mixed from 1634 to 1708". The present baptismal font is probably from the re-building mentioned in the VCH, and consists of an octagonal basin the sides of which are decorated with pointed arches containing a blank shield in each; moulde underbowl; octagonal base with eight deeply-set pointed arches; on a quadrangular plinth; all parts modern. The wooden cover appears earlier: it consists of a flat octagonal platform on which are four vertical ribs with scroll-work at the inner angles; the chains for the raising pulley are rigged to the lower sides. [NB: we have no information on the original font of the medieval church] [the Abbey of Wherwell nearby, founded before 1000 AD, may have likely had a baptismal font as well, but we have no information on it]
