There are two entries for Chilbolton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU3940/chilbolton/] [accessed 17 July 2018], one of which reports a church in it. Drawing of a font in the Harvey Pridham Drawings of English Fonts (MS 56). [Folder Number, Item Description]. University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries. Special Collections Dept., done by Harvey Pridham in February 1889 accompanied by the following description: "All circular, except modern octagonal plinth. Circular bowl inside, no lead, 7 5/8 deep, 3 inch margin; no cover. All cleaned & re-chriselled [sic]. Basin shaped bowl. Position, South aisle, up against pier, West side South doorway." [NB: Pridham description states that the font he drew was the old one totally re-carved; the font described in the VCH [cf. infra] and the one photographed in 2009 do not match the font described and drawn by Priedham] The modern font is noted in the Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 3, 1908): "The font, near the south door, is modern, octagonal with carved panels." The British Listed Buldings entry [www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-139605-church-of-st-mary-the-less-chilbolton] [accessed 29 August 2011], too, has the font as modern, of 1891. The modern font consists of a deeply-carved octagonal basin, its sides decorated with symbols and foliage, raised on an octagonal stem with a double tier of trefoil panels, a moulded base, and a two-step plinth. [NB: we have no information on the earlier font of this church, unless the old font has been totally re-carved]
