There is an entry for this Preston [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [folio 165v; ref.: E 31/2/1/6426] [http://opendomesday.org/place/SO6734/preston/] [accessed 10 December 2018] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it, though one of the sources claims there was a church in it. Verey & Brooks (1999-2002) note a modern font by J.W Hugall, dating to the 1859-60 restoration of this Norman church. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Gloucester, vol. 12, 2010) notes: "Preston church originated as a chapel built by Gloucester abbey. It had its own graveyard in the 1130s [...] and the abbey had established a vicarage to serve it by 1291 [...] Preston church was a simple rectangular structure of squared rubble until it was elaborated in the mid 19th century. Original fabric of the late 11th or very early 12th century survives on the north side and indicates that the eastern end was extended or rebuilt in the 13th century. The Norman material incorporates one high window (blocked), corbel heads, and a squareheaded doorway. The decoration on the doorway's tympanum is carved in the style of the 'Dymock school' [...] The church's dedication to St John the Baptist is not recorded until the mid 19th century." [NB: we have no information on the original font]
