Font Notes:
There is an entry for Sotwell [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU5890/sotwell/] [accessed 4 May 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 3, 1923) notes: "The 'chapel of Sottewell' is first named in 1158 as a dependency of the church of St. Lucian in Wallingford, (fn. 92) which belonged to the priory of St. Frideswide in Oxford. [...] The church of St. James [...] almost entirely rebuilt in 1884 on the old foundations [...] In the exterior of the north wall of the chancel the head of a small 12th-century window from the former church has been built in" [NB: baptisms in this church are recorded from 1684, but we have no information on the original font of the Norman church -- a painting of the church interior before the 1884 renovation shows a baptismal font at the west end; it is of the baluster-type, a design generally found in Britain in 17th and 18th centuries; we have no information on the whereabouts of that font either].
