The church at Oare is described in 'Church notes...' (1887) in the context of some "notes [that] were taken between 1835 and 1840": "A small and poor edifice [...] The tower [...] is of brick, modern and ugly [...] Font a rude cylinder, probably Norman." The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 4, 1924), however, notes: "The chapel at Oare is a small mainly modern building of flint with stone dressings consisting of a chancel and nave, but containing a partly restored north doorway of the 15th century with moulded jambs and a four-centred arch in a square head with carved leaf spandrels; the moulded label has grotesque head stops. The style of the 15th century is also used in the modern work. Over the west gable is a stone bellcote and set in the walling of the gable is a stone cross which appears to be old, probably dating from the 17th century. The furniture is all modern." [NB: was the old font removed between 1887 and 1924?]
