Listed in Mackeprang (1941) as a Romanesque font made of granite in the Sønderjydske Rankefonte group; it was removed from the church at some point and replaced by a later font; the old basin relegated to farm use in nearby Vandling, while the old base was retained at the vicarage; it was restored and brought back into the church in the 1915 renovations. Listed and illustrated in Danmarks Kirker [http://danmarkskirker.natmus.dk/uploads/tx_tcchurchsearch/Sjyll_0397-0438.pdf] [accessed 11 December 2024] as a rather weathered Romanesque font made of granite, with reference to Mackeprang above; it gives the font at Bjerning as cognate. The DK entry further notes and illustrates the replacement font consisting of a an agel protuding from the wall and carrying a small roughly hemispherical basin 37 cm in diameter that bears an inscription in German with the name Arnold Berens, of Flensburg, and the date 1742. Noted and illustrated in Drake (2002) as a baptismal font of the West Jutland type, a group of -according to Drake (ibid.), after Mackeprang- numbers over 120. This one, however, adds Drake (ibid.), is an exception to the simplicity of ornamentation characteristic of the group: "the intriguing bowl at Øster Starup [...] covered with cabbalistic symbols, while on the four demilunes of the base are a lion passant regardant with the Tree of Life, the Agnus Dei, a Tree of Life alone and a four-lobed cross motif with square lobes. The same device appears on the bowl with a similar motif of curving outline and various forms of interlacing." Exterior corner sculpture of lion eating standing man similar to motif on Munkbrarup baptismal font.
