There is an entry for this Hitcham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU9282/hitcham/] [accessed 2 November 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Sheahan (1862) notes the Norman chancel arch in this church but does not mention a font in it. Described in 'Church notes...' (1887) in the context of some "notes [that] were taken between 1835 and 1840": "The font is either Decorated or Perpendicular". There is no font mentioned in the RCAHM (Buckinghamshire, 1912- ). The Victoria County History (Buckingham, vol. 3, 1925) notes: "The church was built early in the 12th century [...] The font is modern." [NB: did the late-medieval font disappear between 1887 and 1912? -- The modern font is situated in the SW corner of the nave, just W of the S doorway]
