Scene Description: Source caption: "the blocked up door on the south side of the nave. This door with its round Norman arch may have been the original entrance to the church since church doors were traditionally on the south side and at that stage much of the village may have been in the area to the south of the church which is now an orchard."

There are three entries of this Somerton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP4928/somerton/] [accessed 14 December 2016], none of which mentions cleric or church in it. The Ecclesiastical and Architectural Topography of England: Oxfordshire (1850) notes: "The font is D[ecorated], with canopies". Murray (1882) reports a font od "singular shape" here. The Victoria County History (Oxford, vol. 6, 1959) notes: "Somerton church must have been in existence by 1074, when a grant was made of the tithes of Northbrook, part of Somerton parish [...] All that now remains of the original 12th-century church is a blocked-up doorway in the centre of the south wall of the nave. [...] The 14th-century hexagonal font is unusual." In Sherwood & Pevsner (1974): "Font. An odd shape; it may be the upturned base of a medieval stone cross."
