Church Notes: 'Lea and Cleverton' always had a single church, St. Gules' -- "ST. GILES'S. church was probably so called in the later 16th century [...] as it was in 1763." [cf. VCH entry in bib.]
Font Notes:
The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 14, 1991) notes: "A church at Lea may have been served by chaplains appointed by Malmesbury abbey, which owned the great tithes in 1248, [...] and apparently remained a chapel. [...] It had a chancel and nave, perhaps undivided and both apparently of the 14th century, a south porch, and a 15th-century west tower. [...] Except for the tower the church was rebuilt to a larger scale in 1879 [...] Parish registers were destroyed in the fire of 1752. [...] Registers of baptisms and burials survive from 1751"; there is no mention of a font in the VCH entry for this church. The present baptismal font in this church consists of an octagonal basin with vertical sides decorated with a large quatrefoil on each panel, and graded underbowl chamfer; a moulding at the centre ring position; raised on an octagonal-to-square prysmatic base and a plain square lower base or plinth. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat.
