No entry found for Froxfield in the Domesday survey. Drawing of a font in the Harvey Pridham Drawings of English Fonts (MS 56). [Folder Number, Item Description]. University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries. Special Collections Dept., done by Harvey Pridham 5 April 1887 accompanied by the following description: "Circular bowl, square foot. Position, on N. side of Nave, opposite S. Door on entering. There are no aisles. Circular bowl, strongly lined with lead. - The diameter at top is 22" at bottom 13 1/2. Total margin 3 1/2, of which 2" stone, 1 1/2 lead: depth 13. Bad cover." The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 3, 1908) notes: "The church of St. Peter-at-High-Cross dates from 1862, three bays of the nave arcade of the old church which was at Froxfield Green being re-used in it. [...] In the vestry at the west end of the north aisle is an eighteenth-century altar table, but no other fittings from the old church have been preserved. [...] The little church of St. Peter on the Green, which stands on the site of the old church, was built in 1887, and contains no old work." The present font matches the general description of the one depicted in Pridham's drawing above: it consists of a plain cylindrical basin raised on a square cluster of eight round shafts with moulded capitals and bases, and is located by the entranceway [NB: we are not able at this time to determine whether the present font is the original from the medieval church, or a modern replica by Blomfield].
