Noted in Buck (1951): "In the former church, which dated back to the thirteenth century, there was 'a large antique font ornamented with sculpture', and when the church was rebuilt in 1785 this old font was discarded and removed to a house in Marlborough, where it served as a cistern" [Buck does not give a source]. Buck (ibid) notes the introduction of a new stone font in 1785 (he gives details of the object), and yet a new font in the restoration of 1879, both of which have survived [NB: not listed separately in this Index on account of their late dates]. The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 10, 1975) writes: "There was a church at Huish by 1291 [...] Since late-13th-century foundations exist near the present building, [...] the church was probably built shortly before that date [...] The church of St. Nicholas is of stone in Early English style and has chancel, nave, south porch, and north vestry. A church was probably built on approximately the same site in the late 13th century [...] The church was in bad repair in 1672 [...] The need to rebuild was acknowledged in 1751 [...] The church was said to be in danger of collapse in 1784 and the following year a new church was built [...] The 18th-century church consisted of a nave, a small chancel, and a south porch. It was shorter than the earlier church [...] By the 1870s the church was again in need of repair and it was extensively restored in 1879 [...] In 1785 a miniature font, still in the church, replaced an earlier one [...] It was itself replaced in 1879".
