Font Notes:
No individual entry found for Aylburton in the Domesday survey. The entry for Lydney parish in the Victoria County History (Gloucester, vol. 5, 1996) notes: "The chapel of ease of ST. MARY at Aylburton, known by that dedication by 1750 but dedicated to St. John in 1471, [...] was established before 1219. [...] In 1855–6 the chapel was dismantled and rebuilt, with the same materials and in almost exactly the same form, at a lower and more convenient site, on the lane which became known as Church Road. The fittings include [...] a plain, cylindrical stone font which cannot be definitely dated but is possibly Norman." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SO6172001950] notes: "Anglican parish church. Mainly early C14, but the whole building removed from original site and rebuilt in present position 1856. [...] Round bowl C15 font on square base." Verey & Brooks (1999-2002) note: "Font, round with a deep rim, perhaps […] c. 1200". The underbowl is cut to octagonal to match the plain stem; the lower base is cylindrical. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat [on a round basin; bought off the shelf?]; appears modern.
