Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Stanway [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/XX0000/stanway-and-wood-stanway/] [accessed 18 December 2018]; it reports a church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Gloucester, vol. 6, 1965) notes: "Although there was a church at Stanway in 1086 [as recorded in the Domesday Book] it was rebuilt in the 12th century, and much of the masonry of the nave and chancel is of that date. [...] Some rebuilding took place in the late 18th century [...] By 1871 the church had a 19th-century octagonal font." That is probably the modern font noted in Verey & Brooks (1999-2002): "the emaciated font is earlier [i.e., than 1896] C19". The font consists of an octagonal basin with vertical sides and chamfered upper rim; four of the sides are decorated with symbols in quatrefoil windows; graded moulding on the underbowl; plain octagonal stem; moulded lower base; octagonal two-step plinth. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat, probably 19th-century as well. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SP0607232365] notes: "Parish Church. C12, C13, C15, C17, C18, restored 1896, minor alterations early C20. [...] Small, octagonal stone font, quatrefoils carved on cardinal sides; stone stem below, up 3 stone steps." [NB: we have no information on the earlier font(s) of this church]
