Font Notes:
The font here is documented in an 1805 watercolour by John Buckler (1770-1851). Buck (1951) notes a trio of similar plain octagonal fonts mounted on octagonal stems at Wilsford, Chiseldon and Ogbourne St. Andrew, all three dating from the late Norman or Transitional period. The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 6, 1962) notes: "Wilsford church was among the possessions of the dean and chapter of Salisbury in the late 11th century. [...] The church, then called a chapel, had a graveyard and a baptistry in the early 15th century. [...] In 1852 the church, with the exception of the tower, was completely rebuilt in Early English style [...] The tower is Norman, but has been extensively restored." There is no mention of a font in the VCH entry. The basin is octagonal with rounded sides; there is a flat moulding at the upper rim, and a round moulding right below that; there is a round moulding at each end of the otherwise plain octagonal stem; moulded lower base; octagonal plinth. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat, with metal decoration and ring handle; modern. The font appears to have been re-tooled recently.
