Font Notes:
There is an entry for [West] Tanfield [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE2679/west-tanfield/] [accessed 26 November 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Glynne's 19 April 1864 visit to this church (in Butler, 2007) reports: "The font is in the tower; the bowl, plain and octagonal, on a new stem" [NB: the church had just undergone a major renovation in 1859-1860, so the stem of the font may belong to that date]. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 1, 1914): "The drastic restoration which the church underwent in 1859 has rendered the history of the building difficult to read. The 12th-century chancel arch was then removed [...] None of the fittings of the church are old, except a plain octagonal font under the tower, which is probably of the 15th century". The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE2679878743] notes; "Church. Early C13, late C13, C15 and C19 restoration"; no font mentioned in it.
