Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Hannington [variant spelling] in the Bomesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SU1793/hannington/] [accessed 8 March 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Ponting (1899) writes of this church: "The font is either a modern one or the old one re-faced to look like new." The Parish web site [www.stmichaelshighworth.co.uk/Hannington_church.htm] [accessed 21 November 2008] gives further details of this font: "The font was originally a plain octagonal one of the 15th century. There is a drawing of it in the British Museum. In 1851 it was restored. The plain surface was carved, and the original stem replaced by a new one. The old one [i.e., stem] was given to Stanton Fitzwarren Church" [NB: the illustration of the Stanton Fitzwarren font shown in Paley (1844) shows that beatiful basin raised on a plain polygonal stem, probably the one originally from nearby Hannington]. [NB: the fabric of the church goes back to the late-12th century nut we have no information on the font of that church].
