view of church exterior - south view

Scene Description: Source caption: "St Mary the Virgin, Mirfield - south side from Church Lane. The parish church of St Mary the Virgin, Mirfield is grade 2* listed (list entry 1134677). Unlike many parish churches that were 'restored' by Victorian architects, here Sir George Gilbert Scott built a complete new church in 1871 just a few yards from the medieval church that it replaced, of which only the tower now remains [...] If the money could be found to clean the stonework, it would look magnificent."

view of church exterior - tower

Scene Description: Source caption: "St Mary the Virgin, Mirfield - the old church tower. The lower part of the square tower was part of the medieval church. The upper part was added in the C15 or C16. The tower, and a few ruined walls, are all that remains of the church since its replacement was built on an adjacent site in 1871".

Font Notes:
There is an entry for Mirfield [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE2020/mirfield/] [accessed 8 September 2018] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Glynne's 22 November 1863 visit to this church (in Butler, 2007) notes: "The font bears the date 1662, has an octagonal bowl, with debased foliage." Ryder (1993) mentions no font here. The entry for Mirfield church in the CRSBI (2018) writes: "The area seems to have been included in the parish of Dewsbury, perhaps as a chapel, and according to legend was created a parish church c.1261. The church was given to Kirklees nunnery in 1397 (VCH III, 170)", but adds: "With so little evidence remaining, the chronology of the medieval church is a matter of debate." In Harman & Pevsner (2017): "The Old font, 1662, is octagonal, with simple foliate panels and fleur-de-lys to tapering bowl."
