There is an entry for Heslington [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE6250/heslington/] [accessed 21 October 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York East Riding, vol. 3, 1976) notes: "The church of St. Paul, Heslington, was in the peculiar jurisdiction of the prebendary of Ampleforth, [...] who provided a curate to serve it. Though technically a chapel, it appears to have been fully parochial in the Middle Ages and was mentioned in 1299 together with its burial ground [...] The old church of St. Peter and St. Paul consisted of chancel, nave with north aisle, and west tower; most of the fabric was said to be 'late and poor', but several windows were described as Norman. [...] A new church of ST. PAUL was erected on the same site in 1857–8, comprising chancel, nave, vestry, west tower with spire, and south porch. It is of stone"; no font in mentioned in the entry. The Heslington Parish web site [http://www.heslingtonchurch.org.uk/index.htm] [accessed 4 November 2008] informs: "St. Paul's, Heslington, is a four-font church […] the font from the original Norman church on this site. It was moved to Heslington Hall when the church was demolished and later sold when the university took possession of the hall. Only recently has it been traced and retrieved. The Victorian font […] is now at the east end of the church containing a floral display. It is beautifully carved out of Caen stone. We also have the marble font from the Methodist church in the village […], obtained when the two congregations came together at St. Paul's. The fourth font is the modern one […] It was made out of stainless steel for the opening of the extension and is the one in current use." This church was visited by Glynne bedore 1840 (in Butler, 2007) but he mentioned no furnishings inside. Butler's annotation (bid.) adds that "the church was totally rebuilt by J. B. and W. atkinson in 1857-8". Pevsner &Neave (1995) note: "Font. A striking piece in stainless steel, 1973", referring to the latest of the four fonts, and do not mention the other three. [NB: professor Peter Main, University of York, was able to confirm [e-mail of 9 November 2008 to BSI] the datings for the Victorian font (1858) and for the later metal font (1973)]
