The original building of St. Michael was probably Norman or Transitional, but we have no information on the font of that church. Campbell (2001), notes: "A carved stone font originally installed in Howarth Church by William Grimshaw in 1749 was removed under the direction of John Wade during his rebuilding programme. Restored to the church in 1929, it was placed in the churchyard [sic].Today the font can be seen on the south side of the churchyard, close to the Black Bull Inn. One hopes that this font, associated with a man who did so much for Howarth and religion, may be reinstated within the walls of the church one day."

INSCRIPTION

Inscription Notes: it apparently was engraved with the donor's name [William Grimshaw] on it
