Noted in Ludorf (1914) and Ligtenberg (1915). Listed in Drake (2002) as a Romanesque font of the Bentheim School, 'Berge a.-Type I' in his classification [others in this group are: Ankum 1, Arle, Berge, Emlichheim, Emstek, Haselüne, Hattem, Jellum, Lastrup, Metelen, a fragment in the Münster Museum, Norg 1, Ochtelbur, Ramsdorf, Recke, Toornwerd, Vries, and a fragment at Zweelo]. The font consists of a round basin with tapering sides, slightly concave underbowl chamfer constrained by a thick roll moulding, under which is a square base defined by four couchant-regardant lions at 90-degree angles of the broad central shaft. The upper rim has been damaged and repaired with inserts. The basin side is decorated with a band of beautifully-rendered acanthus (?) vine with arum bunches between two bands of double rope moulding or braid (the thread in opposite directions), and a band of fan-frieze pattern below.
