Font Notes:
There are two entries for [Lower] Swell in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP1725/lower-swell/] [accessed 14 December 2018] neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Gloucester, vol. 6, 1965) notes: "The small 12th-century chancel and nave remained largely unaltered until the late 15th century [...] The 15th-century octagonal font bears the coat of arms of the Slaughter family". Noted in Verey & Brooks (1999-2002): "Font. C15 […] Octagonal bowl with quatrefoils with flowers in their centres. The chamfer has flowers alternating with heater-shaped shields bearing the arms of the Salughter family. Stem with trefoil-headed panels. It has suffered from refacing in order to remove injuries sustained during its temporary exclusion from the church." The entry for this church in Historic England [List Entry Number: 1274872] notes: "noteworthy C12 church, with remarkable Norman carving, particularly to the doorway and chancel arch. The large 1852 addition by Buckler, whilst altering the character of the church overall, does not detract from the integrity of the C12 core [...] The C15 font was re-cut in C19; it is of octagonal chalice-type with Perpendicular style traceried panelling containing shields bearing the Saltire Cross of the Slaughter family." [NB: we have no information on the original font of this church]
