There is an entry for [Leonard] Stanley [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SO8003/leonard-stanley/] [accessed 14 February 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Gloucester, vol. 10, 1972) notes: "Leonard Stanley had a church from shortly before the Conquest […] The font, which has a narrow bowl on a baluster stem, and its wooden cover are of the early 18th century […] Preserved in the north transept […] an Italian well-head with Romanesque carving which was given to the church for use as a font." [NB: the VCH footnotes the latter mention to the Church Guide, c.1961]. Noted in Verey & Brooks (1999-2002): "Font. Early C18, chalice-shaped. Good contemporary cover with a crown." The Leonard Stanley Parish Council Notes: "The stone bowl and pedestal date from the early 18th Century. Its cover predates it and is from the late 17th Century." Verey & Brooks (1999-2002) report also: "Outside, by the N[orth] porch, a carved Italian well-head, originally acquired for use as a font". John Wilkes [www.allthecotswolds.com] suggests the so-called 'Italian well-head' may be just a 19th-century carving made using old Norman motifs [source: e-mail communication to BSI (2 January 2009)]. [NB: BSI has received local conflicting information [e-mail of 2 January 2009] on the 'Italian object': it appears that the Diocese itself thinks it "a worthless copy" -- we have had no way to corroborate this judgment one way or the other [cf. BSI print archive for source]]. Pevsner & Williamson (1979) mention the font at "Stanley St Leonard" in the context of a number of Norman fonts decorated with "very barbaric figures under arcades".
