Font Notes:
There is no mention of the font in Whellan Francis' 1849 History, Gazetteer, and Directory of Northamptonshire. The basin is illustrated in an undated drawing by Henry E.L. Dryden, now at the Sir Henry Dryden Collection, Northamptonshire. Pevsner & Cherry (1973) note: "Font. Originally probably C13, but the big heads certainly re-worked." Noted in The Knightley Parishes Benefice web site [http://www.theknightleyparishes.co.uk/fawsley.htm] [accessed 1 October 2008]: "The major part of the font is early 13th century, although the original carving has clearly deteriorated, and has been reworked." Only the basin remains of the original font, and badly damaged as well, though re-tooled at some point; it is rounded but made square by the large scroll-like protrusions topped by heads at the angles, the heads themselves appear to be of grotesque humans and beasts; the upper rim has a broad flat moulding, and there is another at the lower angle of the basin; the upper rim may have had some decoration but it badly damaged; there is single piping motif on each of the basin sides; the columnar base, a broad central shaft and four angle colonnettes. is modern, probably 19th-century; the outer colonnettes have foliated capitals while the central shaft has just round mouldings at the top and bottom.
