There is an entry for Bourton [-on-the-Hill] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP1732/bourton-on-the-hill/] [accessed 17 December 2018] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Verey & Brooks (1999-2002) write: "Font. C15, octagonal, with paired trefoil-headed panels." The Victoria County History (Gloucester, vol. 6, 1965) notes: "In 1157 Bourton church, built presumably by Westminster Abbey, was confirmed to the abbey. [...] There was a priest at Bourton before 1206 [...] The octagonal font is of the 15th century." Even though the church itself has some late-Norman elements, the font belongs to the Perpendicular period; it consists of an octagonal basin decorated with a protruding moulding at the upper rim, the sides with double trefoil-headed windows; the overhang of the side ornamentation creates trefoiled archheads on the underbowl sides; there is another moulding at the centre ring position, and two others down the octagonal shaft; the lower base is octagonal to square. The whole stands on a narrow plinth. The wooden font cover is octagonal and flat, with a carved to; probably Victorian. [NB: we have no information on the earlier font(s) of this church]
