There is an entry for Wootton Bassett [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU0682/wootton-bassett/] [accesed 22 July 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor curch in it. The present font is described and illustrated in Buck (1951): "This large font was installed when alterations were made to the church by the architect George Edmund Street in 1870-1 [...] The design is evidently adapted from that of the font at Swayton, Lincs." [Bucks (ibid.) points out the main differences between the two fonts, which are not identical]. The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 9, 1970) notes: "The church is first mentioned in 1200. [...] In 1291 the church was valued for taxation at £16 [...] was extensively restored in 1870–1 by G. E. Street [...] The font and altar with its reredos by Thomas Earp date from this time." In Pevsner & Cherry (1975) [NB: we have no information on the earlier font(s) of this church]
