The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 6, 1962) traces the history of the old cathedral inside the castle walls from its inception at the end of the 11th century, when " the united See of Sherborne and Ramsbury was removed to Old Salisbury" to its transfer outside the wall; it further notes that: "When Leland visited Old Salisbury no tokens of the church and palace remained,[...] with the possible exception of the Lady Chapel." Noted in Pevsner & Cherry (1975): "Piscina (or Immersion font?), S chapel . Perp[endicular]. Panelled base with trough at the top. Recess with diagonally set jambs. Little vault inside. Cusped ogee arch with crockets. Straight top." The present font, a vessel of bronze and limestone designed by William Pye, was installed in September 2008.
