Scene Description: Source caption: "St. Mary's church, Purton. Viewed from the south-east.. St. Mary's is one of only three parish churches in the country that has both a central tower and spire and a western tower. The others are at Wanborough in Wiltshire and Ormskirk in Lancashire. The central tower was built in c.1325 and the transepts were also added in the 14th century."

Font Notes:
There is antry for this Purton [variant spelling] in the Domesday Survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU0987/purton/] [accessed 23 May 2017], but it mentions neither priest nor church in it. The 'Brief guide to St Mary's church' available on the This is Wiltshire web pages [www.communigate.co.uk/wilts/stmaryspurton] [accessed 15 September 2008] mentions a 13th-century font in this church. There is no mention of the font in Pevsner & Cherry (1975). The font consists of a crudely cut octagonal basin raised on an octagonal base and a splaying moulded lower base; the basin is probably the only original part. The wooden cover is round and flat, with metal decoration and ring handle; modern.
