An octagonal font here is documented in an 1806 watercolour by John Buckler (1770-1851). Noted in Buck (1951) as a group of octagonal baptismal fonts with simple plain mouldings and dating from the late 12th or early 13th century in the county of Wiltshire, at Alderton, Blunsdon St. Andrew, Broad Hinton, Collingbourne Kingston, Corston, Fonthill Bishop, Idmiston, Lydiard Tregoze, Marden and Melksham. The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 16, 1999) notes: "Collingbourne Kingston church was standing in the 12th century [...] The church, called St. John the Baptist's in 1344 [...] but St. Mary's by 1763". There is no mention of the font in the VCH entry for this parish. The British Listed Buildings databse [www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-312359-church-of-st-mary-collingbourne-kingston] [accessed 23 February 2012] entry or this church reports: "Font, at west end, C19 Bath stone. Octagonal." The church underwent a major restoration in the 1860s; was the old font removed at that time? If so, did Buck not view the font personally and noted the old font only from secondary sources? [NB: we have no information on the whereabouts of the medieval font].
