A letter to The Editor of The Gentleman's Magazine dated 25 November (issue of December 1831) provides a description of both exterior and interior and points out "I could discover no Norman ornaments of any kind" [indicating perhaps that the early font had perhaps already disappeared?]. Buck (1951) writes: "When this Early Norman church was restored in 1882 by J. L. Pearson, A.R.A., a new font with oak cover was given by Mrs. Grant Meek and her children. It is of the late Norman tabular type". The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 10, 1975) notes: "Bruce church was built in the late 11th or early 12th centuries [...] The first mention of it, however, occurs in 1291. [...] Both nave and chancel are structurally of the late 11th or 12th centuries, although some 19thcentury antiquaries considered them to be earlier." The VCH entry does not mention a font in this church. [NB: we have no information on the whereabouts of the original font of the early-Norman church].
