Font Notes:
Noted in Pevsner & Cherry (1975): "Font. Octagonal, Perp[endicular], with quatrefoils, entirely re-cut." The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 14, 1991) notes: "A church stood in Great Somerford in the late 12th century. [...] The late 12th century church was completely rebuilt between the later 14th and earlier 16th century [...] The church was restored in 1865"; there is no mention of a font in the VCH entry for this parish. The re-cut sides of the present font have floral motifs inscribed in quatrefoils, each within a square panel; there are arches carved on the tall underbowl chamfer, and there are arches also on the stem, as well as mouldings on the lower base; the inner well of the basin is lead-lined. There is a damaged wall-mounted stoup at the entrance; probably medieval as well.
