Font Notes:
There are three entries for Compton [Bassett] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU0371/compton-bassett/] [accessed 7 May 2015], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. A font here is noted in Pevsner & Cherry (1975): "Font. Octagonal, Perp[endicular], with quatrefoils." The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 17, 2002) notes: "Compton Bassett church was standing in the late 12th century. [...] Of the 12th-century nave, part of the west wall survives. The north aisle was added to the nave in the late 12th century, [...] Registers of marriages and of burials survive from 1558, of baptisms from 1563"; there is no mention of a font in the VCH entry for this parish. The present font consists of an octagonal basin with vertical sides decorated with pointed quatrefoiled panels alternating with others in which a floral motif is inscribed in a quatrefoil within a circle; the underbowl chamfer is graded; the pedestal base is plain and there is an octgaonal lower base of darker stone. The font is either modern, 19th-century?, or a re-cut. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat, with metal decoration and ring handle.
