There is a 1806 watercolour of this font by John Buckler (1770-1851). The font is classed in Buck (1950) as one of a group of "Middle Norman circular Fonts, c. 1100-1150" in Wiltshire. Noted in Pevsner & Cherry (1975): "Font. Circular, Norman, with rather disorderly decoration of triangles, lozenges, etc." The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 16, 1999) notes: "Chute church was first mentioned in 1320 [...] and may have been standing long before. [...] [it] almost completely rebuilt in the period 1868-72. [...] A 14th-century piscina was reset in the chancel. [...] Registrations of baptisms [...] begin in 1581 and are complete." There is no mention of a font in the VCH entry for this parish. The British Listed Buildings database [www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-312298-church-of-st-nicholas-chute] [accessed 22 February 2012] reports: "Font at west end, C12 conical bowl with crude zig-zag and chevron decoration.
