Noted in Pevsner & Cherry (1975): "Font. Norman, of basin shape, with little decoration." The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 11, 1980) notes: "Bishopstone church was standing in the 12th century. [...] A fragment of an 11th- or 12thcentury string course set high on the west wall of the chancel is probably in situ: other remains of the 12th-century church are the reset north doorway of the chancel, [...] carved fragments above the south doorway of the nave, and the font. [...] The font was restored in 1882: Bristol R.O., EP/J/6/2/16; Wilts. Cuttings, xvii. 185." The font is a reconstruction using the remains of a Norman basin that had mouldings at the upper basin side, and a geometric pattern cut on the sides; the underbowl and base are completely modern, probably 19th-century. The tall wooden font cover of openwork with a statue of the Madonna and Child, and a dove finial, is also modern.
