Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left."

Old Testament - story of Abraham - the sacrifice of Isaac (Genesis 22)
Scene Description: There are two scenes in the upper frame of the image, left and right; they are tentatively identified as: 1) the scene on the right as Genesis 22:10-12: "And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me." and 2) the scene on the left is Genesis 22:13: "And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son."

Church Notes: CHECK SOURCE http://www.evangelische-kirche-ffo.de/userfiles/St_Gertraud_Bronzetaufe.pdf AND DO TRANSLATION -- church originally 1368 built by the Gewandschneiderinnung [taylors' guild] in 1368
Noted and illustrated in Jiří Fajt, in Die Kunst des Mittelalters in der Mark Brandenburg (2008) with Meister Arnold named as the artisan responsible. Bronze baptismal font consisting of an octagonal basin raised on eight short supports: the four symbols of the Evangelists alternating with four kneeling angels; the basin sides are devided into two horizontal registers, each side into two arcaded panels, except the upper front one in which two of the panels form a single one that holds the Last Supper; other scenes illustrate the Childhood and Public life of Christ, including scenes of the Passion; at the angles of the octagonal basin are figures under Gothic canopies. The font cover is a tall structure in the shape of an octagonal pyramid; like the basin isdes, those of the cover are also layared with scenes of the life of Christ, including some from the Childhood cycle, the Nativity, Adoration of the Shepherds, etc., and others from the Passion cycle, the Crucifixion, Resurrection, etc.; there is openwork separating it from the upper volume, in which there are also several figures represented, above which is the tall finial; the cover is raised via a pulley system. Töppen (2013) [cf. infra] states that the narrative goes from bottom to top; unfortunately this is not the case, nor does it go systematically from left to right or right to left; the bottom register of the basin has scenes from Adam and Eve next to scenes from the Passion, as does the upper register of the basin [to be completed when programme analysis done - see ImagesArea]. There is an inscription all around the lower side of the cover identifying it as the work of Master Arnold in 1376. The baptismal dish was a gift from the Gewandschneiderinnung [taylors' guild] in 1820 [source: www.evangelische-kirche-ffo.de/?locid=63 [accessed 25 October 2014]. Described in Töppen (2013) [www.evangelische-kirche-ffo.de/userfiles/St_Gertraud_Bronzetaufe.pdf] [accessed 26 October 2014]. The following is a rough translation [with the help of Google Translate] of the piece: "Bronze baptism of the Master Arnold of 1376. The bronze font stands out due to its original shape and size; octagonal and round fonts are common, but the hexagonal is less frequent. The basin of this font is hexagonal, supported by three angels, a lion, a bull and an eagle; these symbolize the four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The tall suspended cover is shaped as a tapered hexagonal pyramid covered with rich relief decoration; it is 4.70 meters tall. On the flattened corners of the basin and the hood are small figures arranged without direct reference to the illustrated biblical scenes: 1)an angel and the devil; 2)the female figures of Ecclesia and Synagogia; 3-6)four of the wise and foolish virgins from the biblical parable. At each corner of the font cover stand three figures raised on short pedestals, a total of eighteen figures; there are bishops, saints and martyrs; some of them can be identified by their attributes, such as St. Hedwig, carrying her shoes in her arms, or the holy Bishop Dionysius, holding his severed head in his arms. The biblical story is told in forty-four reliefs. The somewhat unusual program is presented in six rows, the narrative moving upwards, from the bottom of the basin side onto the sides of the cover [cf. caveat above]; two of the rows are scenes from the Old Testament, the other four from the New Testament. Row 1. Programme begins with the Creation of Eve; Eve offers Adam the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge; the Fall; God holds Adam and Eve accountable; Expulsion from Eden dressed in skins and condemned to work. (1. Genesis 2: 18-3, 24). Row 2. Sacrifice of Cain and Abel, Cain's fratricide and its curse (Genesis 4: 1, 1-13). Noah prays with his sons; builds the ark; with his family in the ark (Genesis 6: 1, 14-7.24). Abraham and Lot separate dispute because of the shepherds. (1. Genesis 13: 1-3). Abraham about to sacrifice his son Isaac receives instead an animal victim (1. Genesis 22: 1-13). Row 3. Lamech kills Cain. (1. Moses 5, 23f). The Tree of Jesse (Isaiah 11,1-2) begin the stories of the New Testament: Annunciation to Mary (Luke 1: 26-38), Joseph's doubt and confirmation of birth (Matthew 1: 18-25); Visitation (Luke 1: 39-45 ); Nativity; Annunciation to the shepherds (Luke 2: 1-20); Adoration of the Magi (Matthew 2: 1-12). Row 4. Massacre of the Innocents (Matthew 2: 16ff), Presentation of Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2: 22-33). Flight to Egypt (Matthew 2: 13ff), Mary with Jesus on the way to Jerusalem for Passover (Luke 2, 41 ff); the 12-year-old Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2: 43-49); Jesus' baptism (Matthew 3, (13-17); triumphal entry of Jesus in Jerusalem (Matthew 21: 1-11). Row 5. Temptation of Jesus (Matthew 4: 1-11); the great sinner (Luke 7: 37f); Last Supper (John 13: 21-30); Jesus prays in Gethsemane (Matthew 26: 37-46); fall of converging soldiers (John 18: 3-6); Judas' kiss (Matthew 26, 47-50). Row 6. Jesus before Herod (Luke 23: 6, 12); Flagellation (Matthew 27, 26); Crown of Thorns (Matthew 27: 27ff); Via Crucis (Matthew 27: 31f); Crucifixion (Matthew 27: 33-56); Resurrection (Matthew 28: 1-10); Jesus in Limbo (Apostles' Creed). The Ascension of Christ (Luke 24: 50-53) cuts across all six rows; the disciples look upwards as Christ rises towards Heaven, only the lower part of his body visible in the surrounding halo. Series of images beneath the canopy: Maty crowned Queen of Heavens with Christ beside her; at the six corners are angels playing musical instruments (one has been lost). [***THE NEXT PHRASES IN THESE BRACKETS NEED RE-WORDING*** In general, the image of a program oriented to the baptism of Jesus. Not so with us.] Oddly, the programme begins with the Creation of Eve and ends with the Coronation of Mary. There is a theological justification, though: the Apostle Paul writes in Romans chapter 6: 3-4, "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are with you buried by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." So, we are reborn with Christ through baptism. The church father Irenaeus of Lyon took up this idea in the 2nd century, of Eve and Mary as death and life giver respectively when he wrote: "As stated by the disobedience of a virgin (Eve in paradise), a man (Adam and his descendants) was crashed and died, the man receiving life again by another virgin (Mary)." So, as Eva was death, Mary is life. Master Arnold has unfolded in 44 images the biblical story between Eva (death) and Maria (life), and therefore illustrates what Paul said of baptism. The Old Testament points to life and death through the New Life with Christ. The contrast death-life is also a symbol of the figures of the devil and the angel, of Synagogia and Ecclesia, the foolish and the wise virgins. [***THIS NEEDS RE-PHRASING*** Therefore, the evangelical worship in Thousands may award to the person to be baptized: "Almighty God, who gave birth to you again by water and the Holy Spirit, has forgiven all your sins and will strengthen you with his grace to eternal life." The crowd of 18 saints and saints on their pedestals testify a new life of this people, which they trusting in Christ led. To her now is to include the baptized. Despite unbelief and doubt on his life but the angels of God will it ever again the right way exhibit.] Next to the 1290 bronze baptismal font addition at Marienkirche, Rostock, this one is the most important example of a medieval font in northern Germany. It is one of the richest and most original monumental bronze works from the Gothic period. Around the bottom of the cover we read a Latin inscription, which translates: "In the year of our Lord 1376, this baptismal font was completed by master Arnoldus, his soul happy and blessed by the Lord." Nothing is known about this artist thus far. Can rarely depicted scenes of baptism and in the chancel windows of St. Mary's suppose that he knew this or with the glass painters used the same models. It is noteworthy that these themes are not based directly on biblical texts; the death of Cain by Lamech the blind hunter, for instance, was a very rare scene until then, but it occurs twice in the Frankfurt work. In addition, there are other peculiarities among the reliefs of the Baptism; for example, in the picture of the Harrowing of Hell it is very rarely seen in other places that the gaping jaws of Hell are held open by a rod; as the mouth can no longer snap shut, it is therefore defeated. Jesus Christ "has destroyed the infernal gates and his family have all walked through..." Another scene rarely seen previously is the legend of Joseph's trousers shown in our Christmas story; legend has that Joseph took off his pants so Mary could use them as a diaper for their baby. Since 1349 this legend is commemorated every seven years in the "Aachener Heiligtumsfahrt". Sixteenth-century written sources already mention and boast the then oil-gilded work. The font was badly damaged in 1826, later restored and painted with gold bronze. During WWII it was immured in St. Marienkirche and in 1949, it was badly damaged for the second time when a vault collapsed on it. The colour was removed in the subsequent restoration by metal restorer W. Gummel of Berlin. With the right lighting it is possible to see a faint glimmer of the old gold on the bronze today."
